20 Dec : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on Friday, where he will inaugurate the newly constructed terminal building at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and dedicate development projects worth nearly ₹15,600 crore to the nation.
The integrated terminal, spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, has been designed to handle around 13 million passengers annually.
Alongside the terminal inauguration, authorities have carried out significant upgrades to the runway, airfield systems, apron and taxiways, strengthening Assam’s role as a key aviation hub in the Northeast and enhancing its global connectivity.
The new Guwahati terminal stands out as India’s first airport terminal built on a nature-inspired theme.
Drawing from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, the design follows the ‘Bamboo Orchid’ concept and incorporates nearly 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo.
Visual elements inspired by Kaziranga’s greenery, the traditional jaapi, the iconic one-horned rhinoceros and kopou flowers add to its distinctive identity.
A highlight of the terminal is the ‘sky forest’, featuring close to one lakh indigenous plants, offering passengers a unique, forest-like ambience within the airport.
Passenger Comfort and Digital Innovation
The terminal features advanced passenger-centric technology, including full-body scanners for faster security checks, DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, automated baggage handling systems, fast-track immigration and AI-driven airport operations.
These features aim to improve safety, efficiency and overall travel experience.
On December 21, the Prime Minister will visit the martyrs’ memorial to pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives during the historic Assam Movement, which lasted six years and sought to protect the state’s identity and address the issue of illegal migration.
Later, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for a new brownfield ammonia-urea fertiliser project at the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL) complex in Namrup, Dibrugarh.
The ₹10,600-crore project will meet fertiliser demand in Assam and neighbouring states, reduce import dependence, generate employment, and boost regional economic growth.
