From Rain Relief To Red Alerts: IMD Warns Of Intense Monsoon Across India

Delhi , 7 July : A fresh spell of monsoon rain accompanied by thunderstorms swept across several parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, providing welcome relief from the sweltering heat and humidity that had gripped the region over the past few days.

While the showers cooled the national Capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rainfall in north Bengal and parts of Maharashtra, raising concerns over flooding and landslides.

Delhi Weather Update

The IMD issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi and forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms at isolated places.

The weather department also predicted that intermittent showers would continue over the next few days as monsoon conditions strengthen across North India.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 30°C, around 2.1°C above normal, making it the warmest July morning since July 2, 2024.

Although rain brought temperatures down, humidity remained high, with the ‘feels-like’ temperature touching 44.7°C during the morning.

The IMD said cloudy skies, light winds and scattered showers would continue to provide relief from the oppressive weather.

Alerts in North Bengal

The IMD issued an Orange Alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar, warning of heavy rainfall that could trigger landslides and push rivers such as the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Raidak above danger levels.

Authorities also cautioned that low-lying areas could face flooding and crop damage, while a Red Alert has been issued for the hill districts on Wednesday due to the likelihood of very heavy rain.

Maharashtra on High Alert

Maharashtra continued to face severe monsoon conditions, with torrential rain claiming 13 lives and injuring 10 people over the past two days.

Several rivers crossed warning and danger levels, prompting flood alerts in multiple districts.

The IMD also issued a Red Alert for hill stations including Lonavala, Matheran, Khopoli and Lohagad, where continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides.

Rescue teams have deployed personnel across the affected areas, while authorities continue relief operations and closely monitor weather conditions.
