
New Delhi , 4 Aug : Renowned educationist and former Governor Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil died in Kolhapur on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 90.
Patil served as a Maharashtra legislator during the late 1960s and the 1970s before holding gubernatorial positions in Bihar, Tripura and West Bengal.
The government honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1991 for his contributions to society.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Patil’s death and remembered his work in education and philanthropy.
In a post on X, Modi said Patil devoted himself to improving people’s lives, particularly those of the poor. He also offered condolences to the educationist’s family and admirers.
A large number of mourners gathered at Patil’s Kasaba Bawada residence to pay their final respects. Political leaders, educationists, social workers and citizens from different walks of life visited the residence and offered tributes.
Born on 22 October 1935 in Ambap, Kolhapur, Patil began his political career with the Congress.
He later stepped away from active politics to concentrate on education and social development.
Patil established an extensive network of schools, colleges, universities and hospitals across Maharashtra and other states.
His initiatives expanded access to professional education and healthcare, earning him recognition as one of Maharashtra’s leading education pioneers.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also mourned Patil’s death. He described the news as heartbreaking and said the former Governor’s contributions to education and public service would remain memorable.
Gandhi offered his condolences to Patil’s family, supporters and well-wishers.
Patil leaves behind a lasting legacy in education, healthcare, philanthropy and public life. Leaders across political parties remembered him as a committed social worker who dedicated decades to institution-building and public service.
