31 Jan : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the international recognition after authorities designated Patna Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh and Chhari-Dhand in Gujarat as Ramsar Sites. He said the development highlights India’s growing emphasis on safeguarding wetlands and preserving ecological diversity.
Responding on X to an announcement by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, PM Modi wrote, “Delighted that the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah (Uttar Pradesh) and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch (Gujarat) are Ramsar sites. Congratulations to the local population there as well as all those passionate about wetland conservation. These recognitions reaffirm our commitment to preserving biodiversity and protecting vital ecosystems. May these wetlands continue to thrive as safe habitats for countless migratory and native species.”
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the inclusion of the two wetlands as India prepares to mark World Wetlands Day. He said the latest additions underline the steady expansion of the country’s Ramsar network and reflect continued policy focus on wetland protection.
According to the minister, both Patna Bird Sanctuary and Chhari-Dhand met the international criteria due to their ecological value and rich biodiversity.
Rich Biodiversity and Wildlife Habitat
Officials pointed out that the two wetlands serve as vital habitats for a wide range of migratory and resident birds. Beyond avian species, the regions also support wildlife such as chinkara, wolves, caracal, desert cats and desert foxes, along with several threatened bird species.
India has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of Ramsar Sites over the past decade. Since 2014, the count has increased from 26 to 98, representing a growth of more than 276 per cent.
The expansion underscores the country’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Patna Bird Sanctuary and Chhari-Dhand contribute significantly to local livelihoods by supporting ecosystem services and nature-based activities. Officials said the Ramsar recognition is likely to strengthen conservation initiatives and improve public awareness about the importance of wetlands.
Environmental experts believe the inclusion of these sites sends a clear message about India’s proactive role in protecting natural habitats and highlights the critical role wetlands play in addressing climate change and maintaining ecological balance.
