18 Jan : The government has announced that 30 Amrit Bharat Express trains have been operational since December 2023, with nine new services added to the network.
The expansion has significantly widened nationwide coverage, linking the Northeast, eastern, central, western, and southern regions of the country.
The new routes connect border areas, major urban centres, and important pilgrimage destinations, strengthening long-distance rail connectivity across diverse geographies.
According to an official statement, the Amrit Bharat Express marks a decisive step towards reinforcing India’s long-distance rail network, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and scale.
Improved rail access is expected to support employment mobility, tourism, trade, and access to education and healthcare across multiple regions.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to provide affordable and reliable transport options for the general public.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains are fully non-AC and designed to meet the needs of everyday travellers.
Each train features 11 General Class coaches, eight Sleeper Class coaches, one Pantry Car, and two Second Class–cum–Luggage–cum–Guard Vans with disabled-friendly compartments.
Manufactured with a focus on comfort and safety, the trains aim to deliver a modern and high-quality travel experience in the non-AC segment.
The government also noted that the service follows a simple and transparent fare structure, with fares of approximately ₹500 per 1,000 kilometres and proportionately lower pricing for short- and medium-distance journeys. Importantly, the pricing model does not include dynamic fares.
By bridging regions often separated by distance and limited connectivity, the Amrit Bharat Express supports travel for employment, education, tourism, and family needs.
By combining affordability, wide geographic reach, and passenger-focused design, the service will play a lasting role in promoting economic integration and social cohesion across the country.
