Adampur , 1 Feb : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renamed Adampur Airport in Punjab as Shri Guru Ravidas Maharaj Ji Airport. The decision marked the 649th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas.
The gesture was intended to honour the legacy of the revered saint and social reformer. His teachings on equality, compassion, and human dignity continue to influence India’s social values.
The renaming took place during the Prime Minister’s visit to the Jalandhar region. It signalled the Centre’s intent to recognise spiritual leaders who have played a significant role in shaping inclusive social thought.
The occasion of Ravidas Jayanti holds special significance for the Ravidassia community, particularly in Punjab’s Doaba belt. PM Modi underlined the relevance of Sant Guru Ravidas’s message of unity and social justice, describing it as timeless and essential for a harmonious society.
As part of his itinerary, the Prime Minister was scheduled to visit Dera Sachkhand Ballan, near Jalandhar, to meet Sant Niranjan Das, the head of the Ravidassia community. Sant Niranjan Das was recently awarded the Padma Shri, adding prominence to the visit.
Strengthening Air Connectivity
Soon after the Union Budget 2026 was presented in Parliament, PM Modi arrived in Adampur and simultaneously inaugurated, via video link, the new terminal building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana. The facility is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for Ludhiana and surrounding industrial and agricultural areas.
Halwara, located in Ludhiana district, is also home to a strategically important Indian Air Force station. The earlier airport infrastructure in Ludhiana was constrained by a short runway, limiting operations to smaller aircraft.
The newly developed civil enclave at Halwara features a longer runway capable of handling A320-type aircraft, enabling larger commercial flights.
The Halwara Airport terminal has been designed in line with sustainable development principles. It includes energy-efficient LED lighting, insulated roofing, rainwater harvesting systems, sewage and water treatment plants, and the reuse of treated water for landscaping.
Architecturally, the terminal reflects Punjab’s cultural heritage, offering passengers a distinct regional experience.
Overall, the Prime Minister’s Punjab visit combined cultural recognition with infrastructure development, reinforcing the government’s focus on inclusive growth, improved connectivity, and respect for social reformers.
