New Delhi , 5 Oct : Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday as he began his three-day State visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed Parmelin upon his arrival. The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, mobility and people-to-people ties.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Parmelin is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials and business leaders.
This is his first State visit to India and his second visit to the country this year. He had earlier travelled to New Delhi in February 2026 to attend the AI Impact Summit.
PM Modi and Parmelin are scheduled to hold bilateral discussions later on Monday to review progress in key areas, including trade and investment, science and technology, innovation, mobility and culture. The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments and cooperation through multilateral platforms.
Parmelin will meet President Murmu, who will host a banquet in his honour, while EAM S. Jaishankar will also call on him.
He will attend the India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on October 7, marking one year of the TEPA. Switzerland is India’s largest trade and investment partner among EFTA nations, the MEA said.
The visit comes amid sustained engagement between India and Switzerland. The last State visit by an Indian President to Switzerland took place in 2019, while Prime Minister Modi visited Switzerland in 2016 and 2018.
