10 Sep : Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.
The Ministry said Xi will visit India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Beijing issued the confirmation after Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia-kun earlier declined to disclose whether the Chinese leader would attend the summit.
The BRICS gathering will bring Xi to India for the first time in nearly seven years. His visit comes against the backdrop of continued efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to improve relations following the 2020 Galwan clashes.
India has repeatedly maintained that peace and tranquillity along the border remain essential for sustained progress in ties between the two nations.
PM Modi and Xi are expected to hold substantive bilateral discussions during the summit in New Delhi.
The two leaders recently exchanged a brief interaction at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek. Their anticipated meeting could, however, provide an opportunity to review bilateral relations and developments concerning the border situation.
India and China have maintained communication through diplomatic and military channels to address outstanding border issues.
Recent engagements followed understandings reached by the two countries’ Special Representatives and subsequent discussions under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination.
Senior military commanders from India and China conducted flag meetings at Vacha in Arunachal Pradesh on September 6 and Damai on the Chinese side on September 7.
Special Representatives Meet
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently conducted the 25th round of Special Representatives talks in Beijing.
The two officials discussed the boundary question and broader bilateral relations.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides reviewed progress on understandings reached by PM Modi and Xi in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025.
