Delhi , 7 Aug : Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced persistent rainfall on Friday, bringing welcome relief from soaring temperatures and humidity.
However, the downpour also caused extensive waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across several parts of the region.
The southwest monsoon returned with force after several days of hot and humid conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR as heavy showers continued to impact the capital and neighbouring areas.
Rainwater accumulated in Durga Vihar in South Delhi, while Deoli Road also witnessed significant flooding.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, heavy rainfall submerged the Sector 95 underpass beneath the Mahamaya Flyover. An ambulance became stranded after entering the waterlogged stretch.
Traffic movement slowed considerably on several major roads, including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, the Kirti Nagar stretch, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.
Congestion also affected east Delhi, particularly GT Road, GTB Enclave and Dilshad Garden.
Meanwhile, social media users posted visuals showing flooded streets in Dakshinpuri, Okhla, Sangam Vihar, Sainik Farms and additional stretches of Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.
The IMD stated that an uncommon combination of multiple weather systems over northern India has intensified the current spell of rainfall.
The department warned that heavy showers could continue, increasing the risk of waterlogging, localised flooding and travel disruptions, especially in low-lying areas.
The weather office forecasts Delhi’s maximum temperature between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius.
Surface winds are expected to blow at 10-15 kmph. The IMD advised residents across Delhi-NCR to remain vigilant, avoid flooded routes and exercise caution while travelling as heavy rainfall persists.
