Ebola Outbreak In DR Congo Crosses 3,000 Cases As WHO Steps Up Response

Congo , 27 July : The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has crossed 3,000 confirmed and suspected cases, placing the country’s healthcare system under growing pressure and prompting an intensified international response.

Health workers continue to trace infections, isolate patients and contain the spread of the virus.

The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated surfaces.

The disease can cause high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe internal bleeding, and can be fatal without timely medical treatment.

Health authorities have expanded vaccination efforts while researchers continue to evaluate new vaccines and treatments aimed at improving protection against the virus.

International partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), are supporting the response by supplying vaccines, laboratory services, medical equipment and trained healthcare personnel.

According to the WHO, around 90 per cent of reported cases have been detected in Ituri province in northeastern Congo, a region bordering South Sudan and Uganda.

The province’s proximity to South Sudan and Uganda has raised concerns about potential cross-border transmission if health authorities fail to contain the outbreak.

Response efforts have also faced setbacks. A strike by healthcare workers over unpaid wages has disrupted operations at several hospitals, creating additional challenges for disease surveillance and patient care.

Officials have warned that the outbreak could continue for several months despite ongoing containment measures.

Ebola has claimed more than 15,000 lives across Africa over the past five decades.

Scientists are continuing to accelerate research into vaccines and therapies, with the University of Oxford announcing on Friday that the first volunteers had received an experimental vaccine specifically developed to target the virus.
