New Delhi , 21 July : A day after the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest turned violent, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party leaders staged a sit-in near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The protest was held against the police action on students during Monday’s demonstrations. Echoing the CJP’s demands, the Congress sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leaks.
Congress leaders assembled outside Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg before marching towards the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
During the protest, Rahul Gandhi also demanded the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In a post on X, he said the march was aimed at seeking answers from the Prime Minister over the police action against students and accused the government of avoiding accountability and a parliamentary debate on the issue.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi criticised the Centre over what he described as a “brutal” crackdown on students protesting at Jantar Mantar against the NEET paper leaks.
Police, Protesters Trade Allegations
Speaking outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said students were protesting against a “broken education system” and questioned the use of force against them. He urged the Prime Minister to apologise for the police action and called for an honest review of the education system.
The protest came a day after clashes during the CJP’s march towards Parliament, when students and protesters were lathi-charged and tear-gassed by Delhi Police.
The CJP claimed several demonstrators were seriously injured, while Delhi Police alleged that protesters displayed “unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour” during the march.
