
India captain Shubman Gill moved within touching distance of the No 1 spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings after producing a match-winning 80 in the opening ODI against England at Edgbaston.
The innings earned him 12 additional rating points, reducing the gap to current table-topper Daryl Mitchell to just 11 points.
Gill returned to India’s ODI line-up alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah and delivered a composed innings of 80 from 75 balls before retiring hurt.
Bumrah also enjoyed a successful ODI comeback after an absence of 968 days, claiming figures of 1/31 to move up to 24th in the ICC ODI Bowling Rankings.
Axar Patel emerged as one of India’s standout performers by taking 4/62 before remaining unbeaten on 57.
His all-round display lifted him 18 places to 73rd in the batting rankings, two spots to 42nd among bowlers and into ninth place in the ODI all-rounders’ rankings.
Washington Sundar also impressed with an unbeaten half-century, climbing 24 places to 177th in the batting rankings and rising 16 places to 55th among ODI all-rounders.
England Players and Global Rankings See Changes
Joe Root climbed to joint 12th in the ODI batting rankings after scoring a fluent 76 against India, while Liam Dawson jumped 81 places following his fighting knock of 68.
In the West Indies-New Zealand series, New Zealand fast bowler Jayden Lennox reached a career-best joint 66th in the ODI bowling rankings after claiming a five-wicket haul.
West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph also improved his position after an impressive start to the series.
Zimbabwe opener Ben Curran and all-rounder Brad Evans made significant gains following their strong performances against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, England’s dominant T20I series victory over India also influenced the latest ICC T20I Rankings.
Harry Brook climbed to seventh after finishing as the leading run-scorer of the series, Jos Buttler advanced to sixth, and Jofra Archer moved up to joint 18th in the T20I bowling rankings.
