At G7 Summit, PM Modi Showcases India’s Heritage Through Ashwagandha, Honey And Banarasi Silk Gifts

France , 19 June : Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted Nagauri Ashwagandha, Ramban honey and Banarasi silk stoles to world leaders during the recently concluded G7 Summit in France, showcasing India’s rich heritage in traditional medicine, natural wellness, and artisanal craftsmanship.

India has been actively promoting traditional medicine as an evidence-based, integrated and people-centred component of global health systems. In line with this vision, Nagauri Ashwagandha was among the key gifts presented by the Prime Minister.

Nagauri Ashwagandha is a premium variety of Ashwagandha cultivated in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district. Known for its high withanolide content due to the region’s arid climate and sandy soil, it has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag and carries significant cultural and agricultural value.

In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is regarded as a Rasayana herb that supports vitality, mental clarity, immunity and overall well-being. Derived mainly from its roots, it is widely studied for its adaptogenic and health-supporting properties. The crop also contributes to rural livelihoods while representing the fusion of traditional Ayurvedic wisdom and modern scientific research, aligning with global wellness trends.

GI-Tagged Gifts Reflect Cultural Diversity

The Prime Minister also gifted Ramban honey, produced in Jammu and Kashmir’s Chenab Valley, an area known for its rich Himalayan flora and wildflowers. Valued in Ayurveda and traditional wellness systems, the honey contains natural antioxidants, enzymes and bioactive compounds and is produced by local beekeepers using environmentally sensitive practices.

Another gift was the Banarasi silk stole, a handwoven textile from Varanasi crafted from fine silk and intricate zari work. Recognised with a GI tag, Banarasi silk is among India’s most celebrated textile traditions and supports generations of weaving communities.

India participated in the 52nd G7 Summit as a partner country. During the summit, Prime Minister Modi engaged with world leaders on issues important to India and the Global South. The visit marked India’s 13th participation in the G7 Summit and PM Modi’s seventh consecutive attendance.
