Bangladesh Seeks Increased Diesel Supplies From India Amid Escalating Power & Gas Shortages Crisis

Bangladesh , 7 Aug : Bangladesh has requested India to increase diesel supplies through the cross-border pipeline to help tackle the country’s continuing electricity and natural gas shortages.

The request formed a key part of discussions between Bangladesh’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi during their meeting at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mahmood confirmed that Bangladesh imports diesel from India through the cross-border pipeline and has sought higher supplies to strengthen domestic energy availability.

He said energy cooperation remained one of the principal subjects discussed during the talks.

Mahmood described the meeting as part of his regular engagements with foreign diplomats.

He said Bangladesh and India share several areas of mutual interest as neighbouring countries, making bilateral cooperation essential across multiple sectors, including energy.

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Mahmood on Thursday to review opportunities for expanding collaboration in the power and energy sectors.

Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Anindya Islam Amit, also attended the meeting.

In a post on X, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka stated that both sides discussed strengthening cross-border power and energy connectivity as a vital pillar of the India-Bangladesh economic partnership.

They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation based on mutual interest and mutual benefit while enhancing energy security, supporting sustainable development and improving the well-being of people in both countries.

Earlier in April, India increased diesel supplies by an additional 5,000 tonnes through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline.

The move strengthened Bangladesh’s fuel security as maritime uncertainty in West Asia continued to affect global energy imports and regional supply chains.
