Supreme Court Approves Measures To Speed Up Disposal Of Pending Cases

Delhi , 16 July : The Full Court of the Supreme Court has approved several key measures to accelerate the disposal of pending cases during its meeting held on July 15, 2026.

The decisions seek to improve case management, simplify court procedures and reduce the backlog.

The Full Court decided that all Supreme Court judges will participate in the Special Lok Adalat scheduled for August 21, 22 and 23, 2026, marking the conclusion of the ‘Samadhan Samaroh’ campaign. It also resolved to prioritise the listing of nearly 100 groups (batches) of cases that are ready for final hearing.

The disposal of these matters will likely resolve around 9,177 pending cases.

Thereafter, the oldest cases in which notices have already been issued will be listed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays on a priority basis.

To streamline case listings and ensure greater uniformity in hearings, the Supreme Court will constitute a committee of judges to recommend measures for simplifying the cause list.

The Full Court also reiterated that advocates appearing in matters listed for final hearing must provide an advance estimate of the time required for their oral submissions.

Additionally, the Supreme Court has decided to allow parties-in-person to appear before the Registrar through virtual mode.

Individuals may continue to appear physically if they prefer. In such cases, the court will neither live-stream nor video-record the proceedings.
