Supreme Court To Hear Meghalaya Government’s Plea Against Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Bail

Meghalaya , 3 July : The Supreme Court has agreed to urgently hear the Meghalaya government’s petition challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder case.

A Bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu scheduled the hearing for July 3 after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought an early listing, describing the matter as extremely serious.

Appearing for the Meghalaya government, Mehta said Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly conspired with three others to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their trip to Meghalaya and dispose of his body.

He argued that lower courts had earlier rejected Sonam’s bail applications twice over concerns that she could abscond.

However, the Meghalaya High Court later granted her bail on the ground that the police had not fully communicated the grounds of arrest at the time of her detention.

Mehta argued that the alleged lapse was only a typographical error and should not have justified bail in a serious murder case.

While the trial court granted Sonam bail on April 27, the Meghalaya High Court upheld the order, ruling that police had failed to properly inform her of the grounds for arrest, violating Article 22(1) of the Constitution and Section 47(1) of the BNSS.

According to the investigation, Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam travelled from Indore to Shillong for their honeymoon on 22 May 2025.

On 26 May, the couple left for Sohra, after which Raja went missing. Police recovered his body from a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls on 2 June 2025.

The Supreme Court’s hearing is expected to determine whether the High Court’s decision to grant bail should remain in force or be set aside.
