PM Modi, Merz Review Strategic Ties At G7 Summit, Focus On Trade, Defence And Technology

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on Wednesday, with both leaders reviewing progress in bilateral relations and exploring ways to deepen cooperation across key sectors.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the renewed momentum in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership following Merz’s visit to India and the conclusion of India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations earlier this year.

As India and Germany prepare to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development, technology, innovation, education and mobility.

The meeting marked the second interaction between PM Modi and Merz this year. The leaders welcomed the signing of the Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap and the operationalisation of a transit visa waiver for Indian nationals transiting through Germany.

Sharing details of the discussions on X, PM Modi said, “The talks with Chancellor Merz were very fruitful. We discussed ways to further cement bilateral cooperation by working together in trade, investments, circular economy, defence, IT and more. We also talked about boosting cultural linkages between our nations.”

Upcoming Bilateral Engagements

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They welcomed the understanding reached to end the conflict in West Asia.

Chancellor Merz invited Prime Minister Modi to attend the 8th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC), scheduled to take place later this year in Germany.

Merz had earlier visited India in January at the invitation of PM Modi. During that visit, the two leaders met in Gujarat and agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space and other critical and emerging technologies.

The G7 Summit in Evian marks India’s 13th participation in the grouping and PM Modi’s seventh consecutive attendance.
