31 Mar : InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, has named William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, pending regulatory clearances. The appointment comes after Pieter Elbers stepped down from the position earlier this month.
Walsh currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association. He will complete his term on July 31, 2026. He is expected to take charge at IndiGo by August 3, 2026, or earlier if possible.
Widely known as Willie, Walsh has built an extensive career in the aviation industry. He previously held the top position at British Airways and International Airlines Group, which manages several major airlines across Europe.
IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta highlighted Walsh’s capabilities, noting that his leadership experience and ability to navigate complex aviation markets make him an ideal choice to steer the airline forward.
Earlier in March, Elbers resigned after serving as CEO for more than three years. His tenure saw considerable growth for the airline. However, it also faced operational setbacks, including a significant flight disruption episode in December last year.
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, said, “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo”.
“He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values-driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth,” Bhatia asserted.
Strategic Priorities Ahead
In his upcoming role, Walsh will oversee IndiGo’s operations and long-term strategy. His focus will include improving operational efficiency, expanding route networks, strengthening commercial planning, and elevating passenger experience.
“The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders,” noted Walsh.
This leadership change reflects IndiGo’s ambition to consolidate its position as India’s leading airline while pursuing global growth opportunities. With Walsh’s appointment, the airline is set to emphasise efficiency, innovation, and sustained value creation in a fast-changing aviation sector.
