5 Feb : The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday that Iranian authorities have released eight of the 16 Indian sailors, who will return to India once they complete all formalities.
Addressing a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India remains in contact with Iranian authorities for the release of the remaining eight crew members and has assured full support for them.
Jaiswal highlighted that Indian officials, including the Consulate in Bandar Abbas, have had consular access to the detained sailors.
“Our officials met them, and eight have now been released. We continue to liaise with Iranian authorities to ensure the remaining crew members receive necessary support,” he said.
The sailors were part of the MT Valiant Roar vessel, which Iranian authorities detained in mid-December 2025.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran immediately sought consular access to the crew and has repeatedly engaged the Iranian authorities through diplomatic correspondence and in-person meetings in Bandar Abbas and Tehran.
The Consulate also contacted the UAE-based ship-owning company to ensure provisions, legal representation, and basic necessities for the crew.
Upon learning of depleting food and water stocks on the vessel, the Mission coordinated with the Iranian navy to deliver emergency supplies in early January.
The Indian Consulate in Dubai also pressed the ship-owning company to provide regular provisions and legal support.
The MEA confirmed that the matter remains subject to Iran’s judicial process, while Indian officials continue to press for early consular access and the expeditious completion of proceedings.
The release of the remaining eight sailors remains a priority, with diplomatic channels actively engaged to ensure their safe return to India.
