New Delhi , 3 Feb : President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said institutions of higher learning play a decisive role in promoting inclusive growth, innovation and social advancement. She was addressing students and faculty during the convocation ceremony of Fakir Mohan University in Balasore district of Odisha.
The President observed that the nation’s progress accelerates when growth, security and technological development reach every section of society.
“All universities in the country have a crucial role to play in this field. Universities have a special responsibility to act as catalysts of inclusive growth, innovation and social transformation. By nurturing critical thinking, ethical leadership and research that responds to local and global challenges, institutions of higher learning can shape a future that is sustainable, equitable and rooted in human values,” President Droupadi Murmu said.
Expressing optimism about Fakir Mohan University’s direction, President Murmu said its academic outlook and strong community engagement have the potential to bring meaningful change. She welcomed the institution’s focus on research and outreach activities alongside classroom learning.
Referring to the Balasore–Bhadrak region’s prominence in paddy cultivation, betel leaf farming and fisheries, she praised the university’s research and skill development initiatives in these areas.
Advice to Graduates
Congratulating the graduating students, the President said they could attain respect and recognition through knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication. She reminded them that sustained commitment remains essential for success in any field they choose to pursue.
Highlighting the difference between merely achieving success and leading a purposeful life, President Murmu said personal accomplishments are important but contributing to society holds greater value.
She urged students to support those who have not equally benefited from development, stressing that collective progress defines true societal growth.
“India has a rich knowledge tradition. Our scriptures and manuscripts are full of knowledge and wisdom. Apart from poetry and literature, they are also a source of knowledge in areas including science, medicine, astronomy and architecture. Young students can conduct research in this ancient knowledge tradition. By understanding the past and comprehending the present, the students can shape their own future as well as the future of the country,” the President added.
Citing renowned Odia poet and social reformer Fakir Mohan Senapati, she reiterated the importance of the mother tongue, as emphasised in the National Education Policy 2020, and paid tribute to his lasting influence, recalling how his work Revati left a deep impression on her during her student years.
