Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday recalled Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to India’s hockey tour of New Zealand a century ago. He said the historic journey laid the groundwork for 100 years of sporting ties between both nations.
Addressing young participants virtually during the Khelo India Dialogue, PM Modi connected Dhyan Chand’s legacy with India-New Zealand sporting relations. He also recalled the legendary hockey player during his recent visit to New Zealand.
PM Modi said National Sports Day offers an opportunity to remember Dhyan Chand. He noted that the hockey team’s 1926 New Zealand tour included the celebrated player.
He said the visit established the foundation for a century of sporting relations. India, he added, continues to strengthen and deepen these ties.
The Prime Minister stressed that sport means more than winning medals. He linked India’s sporting strength with its youth power and the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
He said sporting participation can foster personal growth, strengthen families and enhance national pride. PM Modi also highlighted the wider impact of an athlete’s success.
According to him, a successful sportsperson can raise the profile of their family, school, college, district and state. Repeated sporting achievements can also improve how the world views an entire region.
He said every district possesses the potential to earn recognition on the global sporting map. Prime Minister Modi urged young Indians to view sport as a pathway to broader development and national progress.
