Delhi High Court Seeks Reports On Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Plea Urgently

New Delhi , 15 July : The Delhi High Court sought reports from the Centre and the Delhi Government on a petition concerning social activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike seeking Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. The court will hear the matter on July 16.

During the hearing, Chief Justice D K Upadhyay observed that no representative from the Central Government was present.

The court issued notices to the Additional Solicitor General and the Delhi Government’s counsel and scheduled the hearing for July 16.

Advocate Rakesh Saini, appearing for the petitioner, informed the court that Wangchuk’s health had deteriorated significantly due to his prolonged fast.

He argued that the activist’s life was in danger and alleged that the authorities had not taken adequate steps to protect him.

The petition urged the court to direct both governments to provide immediate medical treatment to Wangchuk.

It also requested that authorities administer a liquid diet if medically required to save his life.

The petitioner told the court that Wangchuk was exercising his democratic right to protest but was placing his life at grave risk.

The plea said Wangchuk has lost nearly 8.5 kg during the hunger strike, and his condition could turn critical within two days.

The petition further stated that Wangchuk’s death would bring shame not only to India but also to the international community.

Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28. He launched the protest against alleged question paper leaks and irregularities in the education system.

Wangchuk also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The demonstration forms part of an agitation led by the Cockroach Janata Party, which began on June 20.
