Centre Monitoring 1,987 Infrastructure Projects Worth Rs 42.50 Lakh Crore Across 17 Ministries

New Delhi , 25 June : The Central government is currently monitoring 1,987 ongoing infrastructure projects with a total revised cost of Rs 42.50 lakh crore across 17 Central Ministries and Departments, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) for May.

Among the sectors, transport and logistics account for the largest share, with 1,476 projects carrying a revised cost estimate of Rs 23.50 lakh crore. The sector continues to play a pivotal role in the government’s infrastructure-led growth strategy focused on improving connectivity across the country.

The ministry reported that cumulative expenditure on these projects has reached Rs 21.82 lakh crore, representing 51.34 per cent of the revised project cost, indicating steady implementation progress.

According to the data, 817 projects, or 41 per cent of the total, have achieved more than 80 per cent physical progress. Meanwhile, 280 projects, accounting for 14 per cent of the total, have crossed 80 per cent financial completion.

The ministry noted that the project portfolio remains balanced, with infrastructure works spread across both early and advanced stages of implementation. A significant number of projects are concentrated in the 0–20 per cent and 81–100 per cent progress brackets, reflecting a mix of newly launched projects and those nearing completion.

Roads and Railways Lead Infrastructure Push

Of the total projects, 813 are mega projects with a cost of Rs 1,000 crore and above, carrying an original cost of Rs 31.58 lakh crore. Another 1,174 major projects, valued between Rs 150 crore and Rs 1,000 crore, have an original cost of Rs 5.52 lakh crore.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways leads with 1,149 projects worth Rs 10.95 lakh crore, accounting for 26 per cent of the total revised project cost. The Ministry of Railways is implementing 261 projects valued at Rs 8.79 lakh crore.

Other major contributors include the ministries of Coal, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, and the Department of Water Resources, River Development and GR.
