Amit Shah Inaugurates ₹1,445-Crore Transformation Plan For Kolhapur’s Mahalaxmi Temple

Kolhapur , 20 June : Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Saturday unveiled the ₹1,445.97-crore Shri Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) Temple Redevelopment Project in Kolhapur.

The large-scale initiative is designed to safeguard the temple’s architectural heritage, upgrade facilities for pilgrims, and encourage tourism-led growth across the region.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony alongside other dignitaries.

Ahead of the inauguration, Amit Shah and his wife visited the temple to offer prayers and participate in religious ceremonies.

The leaders later performed the customary shrifal ritual and unveiled a commemorative plaque at Ramacha Paar inside the temple complex, officially signalling the start of the redevelopment works.

Planned improvements include the construction of a dedicated circumambulation pathway, restoration of shrines surrounding the main temple, and conservation of the historic structure.

Revitalising a Centuries-Old Spiritual Landmark

Recognised among India’s most significant Shakti Peethas, the Shri Karveer Nivasini Mahalaxmi Temple has remained an important centre of faith for over a thousand years.

Its distinctive Hemadpanthi-style architecture continues to attract devotees and visitors from across India and abroad.

The Maharashtra Cabinet approved the project budget of ₹1,445.97 crore on 6 May 2025, paving the way for comprehensive redevelopment efforts.

Authorities have divided the scheme into three phases, with the opening stage concentrating on structural preservation in accordance with archaeological norms.

Restoration activities valued at ₹32.96 crore are already in progress, while an additional ₹23.05-crore package covers modern electrical systems, surveillance infrastructure, and enhanced illumination.

The project also includes the renovation of 41 nearby temples and improvements along the traditional Nagar Pradakshina route.

Once completed, the expanded complex will provide modern amenities such as a large darshan hall, annachhatra, multipurpose venue, amphitheatre, information centre, Vedic school, organised commercial spaces, extensive parking facilities, administrative offices, security checkpoints, and a first-aid centre, creating a more convenient experience for devotees.
